About Jean Grey
Jean's history with the X-Men is long and complex. She has been through so much in her life. I will atempt to sort it all out for you, but if you come across any discrepancies, please don't hesitate to email and let me know.
Jean's Powers
Jean is arguably the most powerful telepath on the planet, her ability to read minds is immense, & when you couple this with her telekenetic powers (she ability to move objects with her mind), she is a force to be reckoned with.
Jean's Early History
As a child, Jean watched her best friend be struck by a car, and held her in her arms as she died. This trauma began the release of Jean's natual mutant powers. Jean felt her friend's emotions...as you can imagine, this left quite an emotional scar on her.
Jean was one of the first mutants to be recruted by Charles Xavier for his group - the X-Men. The fifth to join the team, she took on the name Marvel Girl. It was then that she first met Scott Summers, her long time love and future husband.
The Phoenix Saga
Jean played host to the Phoenix entity, an alien being powerful enough to destroy solar systems. Jean managed to keep this force in check for a time, however, after Mastermind did some fiddling with her mind, Jean could no longer control it. She unwillingly became Dark Phoenix, and nearly took out the whole world before sacrificing herself to save those she loved. If you haven't yet read the Drak Phoenix saga, I highly recomend it to anyone.
Clones and Doppelgangers Jean has died, been cloned and copied, and been tossed around among dimensions and time lines probably more than any other character in the Marvel universe. The most notable of these occasions has to be Madelyne Pryor, a clone created by Mr Sinister. Scott even married and had a child (the furtue Cable) with this woman. She eventually went insane, became the Goblin Queen, and was killed in combat by Jean Grey. (I warned you her history was complicated)
A Stich in Time After Cyclops finally managed to pop the question to the right woman, he and Jean were whisked away n their honeymoon to an alternate time. The culpret? Their own future daughter, Rachel Summers. There they were placed into different bodies, helped to raise Nathan Summers - Scott and Madelyne's son, and averted a plot to destory the world. No rest when you're an X-Man.
The Affair Not too long after returning from the future, Scott apeared to die while merging with Apocalypse, Jean swapped powers with Pyslocke, and all was a mess again. It was discovered that Scott was alive, Phoenix was still with Jean...and Scott found comfort in none other than Emma Frost. The two began something of a psychic affair. Needless to say, Jean busted them.
The End? And so we skip ahead to the most recent 'death'. this one was at the hands of Xorn/Magneto, who, causes her to have a fatal stroke right before Wolverine freaks out and decapitates him (won't see that in Silver age X-Men). So, Jean's good and dead now, right? Scott and Emma are little love-monkies, and all is peaceful. Until the Shi-ar decide to blow the hell out of the Phoenix. A small part survives, and searches out Jean to make it strong again. This leads into the Endsong series. So, it raises her body in a very eerie couple comic panels, and once again, we have a Jean Grey. In the end, Jean bonds with Phoenix in a way she hasn't before, and seemingly gets blown up by the Shi-ar (they aparently have this obsession with blowing stuff up). An end scene in the series, shows Jean alive and well with hundreds of other Phoenix hosts, so the question as to whether Jean is currently truly alive or dead is anybody's guess. I'm guessing she's alive in a cosmic sense, but currently not to interested in the affairs of the X-Men, although she may turn up pretty soon. You know Marvel can't resist a good 'Jean's back' stroyline!
