Spider-Woman Series Update (Posted 9/28/2008)
Spider-Woman: Agent of Sword by Bendis and Alex Maleev will debut March 2008. It will be the first ongoing by the team since they left Daredevil. “We’re hoping, god-willing, you guys-willing, we’ll stay on that book for a long time on this one as well,” Bendis said. Jessica Drew? Bendis: If she’s still alive, and “if the Skrulls didn’t eat her for Skrull Rosh Hashanah,” she might be in Spider-Woman: Agent of SWORD. He added that readers will find out in Secret Invasion #8 whether Jess survives the Secret Invasion story-line.
Brian Michael Bendis announced recently at the Wizard World Chicago comic-con that, as he promised a couple years ago, an ongoing Spider-Woman series will be coming out in 2009 called Spider-Woman: Agent of SWORD. “It will be written by me and drawn and painted by Alex Maleev,” he said. “Now you know why it was delayed.” Benis added that “whoever it is who will be in the Spider-Woman costume will be in a very dark place. It’s going to be something in the same kind of tone as Daredevil for fans of that comic, but also something very new and different.”
Here are some various Spider-Woman images and covers relating to the recent Skrull invasion of the Marvelverse….which also imply an unsettling turn of events for our favorite heroine….dammit.
As posted to the Jessica Drew Wikipedia entry, the new Origins story retools a few bits of Jessica’s past:
Origin does away with the spider-blood serum and genetic accelerator elements of the character’s previous origin story. Instead, Jessica’s powers derive from her mother’s womb being hit by a laser beam containing the DNA traits of several different species of spiders while she was carrying Jessica (the Drews were trying to splice and harness spiders’ environmental adaptive capabilities, in order to graft them into the human genome).
After Jessica’s parents disappeared under mysterious circumstances, Jessica was recruited into HYDRA (under false pretenses), where she was made into a formidable fighter/assassin. She was trained and mentored by Taskmaster, who schooled her in many martial disciplines and more than seven different fighting styles out of his own “arsenal”.
In this re-telling, Otto Vermis, who had originally recruited her into HYDRA, is rather an old, retired HYDRA agent who Jessica seduces in order to gain information that will lead her to her mother.
In addition, Origin made the following modifications:
Merriem Drew was now Miriam Drew.
The Drews moved to Wundagore Mountain prior to Jessica’s conception, establishing without a doubt that she was born on the European landmark. Afterwards, she was raised by her nanny Bova (who was human in appearance), as well as her mother.
Jessica’s father, Jonathan, never found uranium on their land. Instead, their research was funded by HYDRA, and their direct liaison/financier from the group was General Wyndham. It isn’t clear what connection, if any, he had with Edgar Wyndham (who in the original Spider-Woman books was Jonathan’s best friend and research partner), nor with the High Evolutionary.
Jessica’s father was never possessed by the spirit of the Sixth Century magician Magnus; no reason exists for Magnus, decades later, to help Jessica in many of her adventures.
Jessica’s father worked in large part with Miles Warren, who later left the project because he felt that there was more potential in experimenting with the cloning of human cells.
Brian Bendis recently revealed that Spider-Woman has made it into the ranks of the upcoming New Avengers book from Marvel.
He had this to say about Jess: “The spy without a home. Ex-Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., ex-Agent of Hydra… this is the only place she can go, and she is one of those who feels someone was pulling her strings through out this entire year. She also has an unrevealed relationship with Nick Fury, who is still underground. And what his connection to all this is will be revealed this year.”
He also mentioned the upcoming solo series for Spider-Woman, that he will write, and Alex Maleev will provde art for.
“She also has a monthly series coming that Alex [Maleev] and I will be doing in the future. Everything that’s going to happen to her in New Avengers will set that up. It’s a new direction for the character that needs set-up. She’s going to find her true calling, let’s say.”
Comic Candy, the hugemoungous comic book image gallery and news site that I run (and also the site I upload all the images and other things found on this site to), has gotten into trouble this month for being a big pig.
It used too many resources for the hosting plan I was on and had to be moved to a semi-dedicated server (which has put me into a bit of sticker shock…). So, as much as I hate begging for money via the internet, I will in order to keep my various sites online. If you enjoy any of my sites, please consider a donation by paypal to them, no amount is too small, and every donation is greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance, and hopefully no one is too offended by my fundraising efforts.
by Wordpress. I have decided to use Wordpress to help me add updates and news to my collective of Fanlistings. I looked at various other scripts and none of them seemed to work as well as a bit of creative WP useage, comments are activated for all news stories too.
Hopefully this will make it quicker & easier on me to add new updates, news, press releases, etc.
I have updated Entangled, which is the Spider-Woman (1 - Jessica Drew) Fanlisting with some new content, and a new layout. Once again, the art is by Frank Cho, and I provided the colors (my first “real” attempt at coloring inks digitally, it turned out ok I think for a first try).
